Spa Cover Cleaning & Care Instructions
A well-maintained spa cover doesn’t just look better — it lasts longer. With a simple routine, you can extend the life of your cover by years and protect your investment from premature wear. Below you’ll find care tips and best practices designed to keep your cover performing its best in any season.
Some of these tips apply to cover made with vinyl. For specific WeatherShield™ tips please visit our WeatherShield™ Care & Cleaning Tips.
🧽 Keep it Clean
- Clean the vinyl exterior at least twice per month using a mild soap and water solution.
- Avoid harsh cleaners that may dry out or degrade the vinyl.
- Wipe down the underside of the cover regularly to remove chemical residue from steam and water vapor. These residues can break down materials and make the cover porous over time.
💧 Condition the Vinyl
- Apply a non-silicone protectant like 303® Protectant every two months to keep vinyl supple and crack-resistant.
- Do NOT use silicone-based products, which may pull moisture from the vinyl and accelerate aging or cracking.
🧪 Maintain Water Chemistry
- Keeping your spa water chemically balanced is critical.
- Unbalanced water increases the corrosiveness of vapors, which degrade the protective layers of the cover.
- Improper water maintenance may void your warranty.
🧼 Clean Inside the Zippers
- Twice a year, unzip the cover and clean just inside the zipper using a mild ammonia-and-water solution.
- This helps prevent mildew buildup, especially in cases of low sanitizer levels.
🔁 Flip the Foam Cores
- Remove and flip the EPS foam cores once a year to even out vapor exposure.
- This helps extend the life of the internal vapor barrier and improves overall performance.
🌫 After Shocking the Spa
- After adding shock treatment to your spa, remove the cover for 20–30 minutes.
- Shock releases corrosive vapors that can break down the inner lining of your cover if trapped.
💨 Let It Breathe
- Remove the cover completely at least once per week to allow any collected water to drain.
- Always remove the full cover when using your spa. Avoid the habit of folding only half open, which can warp the foam cores and fabric over time.
🛡 Use a Floating Blanket
- Add a floating thermal blanket beneath your hard cover to reduce evaporation.
- Less evaporation = fewer chemical vapors hitting the cover, which helps reduce material breakdown and moisture saturation.
